. Pharmacological Classes and Mechanisms of Veterinary Dermatology Drugs

Veterinary dermatology focuses on the management of pruritus (itching), pyoderma (infection), and immune-mediated skin diseases in companion animals.

Key Therapeutic Categories

  • Janus Kinase (JAK) Inhibitors: Drugs like Oclacitinib target the signaling pathways of cytokines (specifically IL-31) that trigger the itch sensation in allergic dogs. By blocking the JAK1/JAK3 enzymes, these drugs provide rapid relief from atopic dermatitis without the systemic side effects of steroids.

  • Monoclonal Antibodies: Lokivetmab is a biological therapy that neutralizes IL-31 directly. Because it is a protein, it is metabolized like natural antibodies, making it safe for patients with liver or kidney impairment.

  • Keratolytic and Antiseborrheic Agents: Topicals containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid are used to manage follicular flushing and normalize the rate of skin cell turnover.
